The term is Anaximander's, c. 610 BCE — the first principle in Western thought to abandon the requirement that the source of the cosmos itself be a definite thing. The apeiron is the substrate without limit, generative and indifferent, from which all bounded forms emerge.
We have borrowed the name because it describes what markets are. Not objects but processes. Not states but flows. Not knowable in full, but knowable in shape. Our work begins with that recognition.
